Fall & Winter Pool Maintenance Checklist for Rhode Island Homeowners

Why Seasonal Pool Care Matters

Rhode Island winters can be tough on pools. Proper fall and winter maintenance isn’t just about closing things down—it’s about protecting your investment so that you’re not stuck with damage, algae, or equipment issues come spring.

This interactive checklist helps you cover every base.

FALL POOL MAINTENANCE CHECKLIST (September–October)

☐ Balance water chemistry

  • Test and adjust pH, alkalinity, and sanitizer levels
  • Add a phosphate remover if algae was an issue this season

☐ Deep clean your pool

  • Vacuum debris, brush walls, clean waterline
  • Empty skimmer and pump baskets

☐ Inspect your pool equipment

  • Check for leaks, rust, or odd noises
  • Replace worn-out o-rings, gaskets, or filters

☐ Schedule professional inspection

  • Contact us for seasonal inspection and servicing if unsure

☐ Consider end-of-season upgrades

Need a new liner, heater, or cover? Ask our pool services team about off-season installs

WINTERIZATION CHECKLIST (October–November)

☐ Lower the water level

  • Drain water to just below the skimmer line (for mesh covers), or per manufacturer recommendations

☐ Blow out lines and add antifreeze

  • Prevent pipe freezing and costly cracks—have this done professionally unless you’re experienced

☐ Add winter chemicals

  • Add winterizing shock, algaecide, and stain preventer
  • Use a non-chlorine oxidizer if using a saltwater system

☐ Remove and store accessories

  • Ladders, handrails, skimmer baskets, floats, and toys should be dried and stored

☐ Clean and store pool equipment

  • Clean filter cartridges or backwash sand filters
  • Disconnect and drain the pump, filter, heater, and chlorinator

☐ Install a winter safety cover

  • Use a solid or mesh safety cover to protect your pool and keep out debris

BONUS: HOT TUB & SPA WINTER CARE

If you’re keeping your hot tub or spa open during winter:

  • Test water weekly
  • Keep filters clean
  • Use a well-fitting insulated cover
  • Maintain water level to avoid pump burnout

If closing your hot tub, follow the same winterization steps—or have our team handle it with our hot tub services.

MID-WINTER CHECK-IN (December–February)

☐ Check cover tension and water levels

  • Heavy snow or ice can cause sagging or damage
  • Use a cover pump to remove standing water

☐ Visually inspect lines and equipment (if accessible)

  • Catch cracks or leaks early—especially after extreme cold snaps

☐ Monitor yard drainage

  • Ensure melting snow or rain isn’t collecting near the pool deck or equipment pad
